I know that this review is a little late but I have finally been able to see the movie, Battle: Los Angeles. The science fiction action flick has just recently hit the stores on DVD and blu ray. I was very excited when the film came out because it was on my must see list but never got around to seeing it in theaters. So after finally viewing the film, I am ready to share my opinion and criticism on the film.

The Plot, Review and Rating

The movie takes place in modern times when the Earth is breached by aliens. Has what is to be believed just meteors, the World slowly begins to realize that we are not being attacked by mother nature, but rather another life form that is determine to take over our planet because of our water source. Earth, being the only planet with water in a liquid state becomes a primary target for these extra terrestrials because of their need for water. Now, our military of all kinds must band together to fight not just to win a war, but to survive and save the human race. It is a race against time that may just determine the fate of the world.

The film starred a great, but not an all-star cast which I thought made the film work much better. Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, were the films more recognizable names in the film. The film was rounded off with a great and young supporting cast. Eckhart’s character Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz was on the verge of retiring when he had to assist in one last job, saving the world from aliens. Eckhart played his role well as the veteran who had some pretty heavy baggage to live with. Eckhart acted out the emotional leader as well as the physical nature of his character very well.

I loved how this film was done. It was made very realistic. It wasn’t some high tech alien force that would just wipe us out. The film portrayed the alien race as a little more advanced in weapon technology than the human race but not by much, and also that they too rely on water for survival. I love how the battle scenes were shot like an actual war picture. To me it was like watching Saving Private Ryan or Black Hawk Down style scenes, but instead of another human force it was against alien. I thought the film also showed the bravery and relationships that the military personal really portray in real life. Sticking together even if it means you might die and never leaving a man behind. Also, pulling together and fighting an enemy we know nothing about no matter how crazy it seems that another life form is trying to destroy us. Another interesting aspect of the film was the actual location of where the movies was filmed because being from Louisiana it is always neat to see some familiar places that the filmed uses. Some of the film was shot in Baton Rouge and Shreveport, Louisiana.

All in all I would say that this film was a great film. The film excels as both a great action flick as well as a clever and original science fiction thriller. It was not over the top with special effects which was a great plus in my book. The movie is very entertaining and pretty much does not slow down until the final scene. Great performances all over that did not seem fake or overacted. I would say that on a scale of one to five stars I would give the film a four star rating. The only thing I might have changed about the film was a few more up close and personal encounters with the alien life forms. Battle: Los Angeles is definitely a film I would recommend to see at least once, but if you are an action of science fiction junkie I would say get this film for your collection.

Thanks for the review. Some critics have given it a thumbs down so it was good to read a contrast. Two questions though: whats with all the killer aliens this year? What happened to E.T.?

Thanks for stopping by. I dont know whats going on with all the evil aliens. I guess all this end of the world talk has directors taking a different approach to alien flicks. I never really follow movie critics. some of my favorite films are ones that critics hated or didnt give great reviews on.

Hey, your right fullerman, movie goers learned a long time ago not to take them too seriously, unless they got your trust, like for example Siskal & Ebert.

I'm still not sure despite the good review if I'd watch it. In all honesty, films like these are so boring, as I only need Independance Day to prove my point on them being generic. Want more evidence? How about the hastily made Cowboys and Aliens, a scenario that shouldn't be taken seriously?

Human stereotypes VS Alien stereotypes - what makes this film different to others beside bigger explosions and worse dialogue? Still, I'll watch this film anyway ^^

I can see where you are coming from John and I can see why you would be hesitent. Whats great about this film is that its basically our military fighting against these aliens who are not to far advance. This film isnt aliens coming down blowing up cities and we some how find a way to destroy them. Its more of a war film against another form of species.
